The four elements of this sculpture are a fragment of a grate, bicycle wheel, handle and bracket from a hand lawn mower, and a set of cast metal movable levers (of unknown purpose in the past). They had been in my “boneyard”waiting to be matched up, for several years.
Inverting the handle from a hand mower was the key element in bringing these disparate pieces together. This gave a sturdy support to the display of the wheel.
For accents, I used “trapping” as a joining technique. In this case, I put a 3rd (weldable metal) part through a hole in the cast levers and welded that, trapping the mystery antique machine parts.
I like the look of these levers at right angles with the orientation of the bicycle wheel, just under the bracket for the mower handle.
For a balance, and stability, I wanted a wide-spread base. I welded the handle to the grate fragment as an anchor.
Grate Cycle is a strong sculptural presence ! |
