Metal sculpture - metal panel with arched metal top

Statement:

I am a sculptor who has focused on the reuse of “found objects”, using society’s discards to make abstract assemblage sculpture. This makes me a collector and match-maker of abandoned artifacts.

I love the creative moment, the spark when the shapes, colors and textures interact in their “new life” with each other and the spaces they inhabit. It’s the “not me” part.

This is followed by the challenge of engineering the mechanics : how to do the joinings, which display format, how to give this union stability, what surface-finish to use. The whole process is very engaging.

My work is in metal or mixed media and ranges in size (from small to more monumental scale). It can be wall-hung or free-standing (for display on shelf/table/pedestal, on the ground or raised on a base or pole).

Metal appeals to me with its strength, permanance, texture and color. I am drawn to the color and light of plastic and glass.

I may use cultural flotsam and detritus to suggest a narrative or representional element in a piece. The use of masks in pieces is a good example of this process. I also make pieces that are solely about the experience of abstract space, line or form.

History :

My Evolution as an Art Maker
I began to explore my relationship to art making during my mid-twenties. I raised a family and taught elementary school children, with “art on the side”.

During my forties, single with my children grown, I had new freedom to invest myself. While teaching full time, I began more serious study of sculpture and watercolor at Santa Rosa Junior College and College of Marin.

With this commitment, there was a shift from being “a teacher who makes art”,to being “an art maker who teaches”.

While I was teaching full-time, I served as art mentor for the elementary school for 2 years.

I began to show my work locally, in community festivals, fairs and arts organizations’ exhibits. I had several personal shows. My studio has been in both Sonoma County’s open studio tours : ARTrails for 10 years & Art at the Source for 4 years (on-going).

I recently made another shift to increase my art making time, I retired. My goal is to be more productive and keep my work flowing back-into-the-world, creating space for new pieces to be made!
