Because I like curves and repeating patterns, I have saved several these plates of negative space. These patterns were made years ago by someone cutting out circles from this steel sheet.
I trimmed it to give it a semblance of symmetry and balance. I made a simple weighted base, to support this intriguing pattern. Because the sheet is slightly elevated from the base, the image is “presented”, instead of being part of the base. This has given it an altar-like appearance.
I was moved by this metaphor : the column of completed circles-gone is a strong reminder of the missing. The partial circles remain as hints, less definite, fading indicators of what once was. All are reminders of the past. This is a natural process of life.
I am very pleased with this simple, strong abstract sculpture. |
